I really wanted to give this a good review because to some extent I thought the characters were good... BUTThe two main characters committed an act of serious vandalism which they would not have gotten away with in the real word, vandalism that would have cost thousands of dollars worth of damage. There was not even the slightest sign of regret, in fact they were proud of it. That it was done to a business that had a manager who was a jerk (but was not even the owner) does not even come close to excusing it.There were other acts of violence and vandalism, criminal behaviour, by the two main characters which were very troubling. Their only regret seemed to be that they were punished for it. There was no indication that they regretted doing more thousands of dollars in damage and putting someone in the hospital. Were they committed against someone who had also been violent? Yes, but at no point do they express remorse for not having brought charges against him instead of taking revenge. Even at toward the end Connar framed someone for a crime in order to get back at him, continuing the same criminal behaviour. In fact, they learned nothing as far as I could tell.I honestly cannot recommend this novel in spite of the fact that there are enjoyable parts. I especially do not recommend it for teens. This book as a whole was a very good read and paid great attention to real life situations. I would believe the theme of this book would fall under a coming of age story and overcoming the stigmas that come with the territory of being “different”. I believe author’s intent was to bring attention to real problems that plague the LGBT community and discuss the hard truths of bullying and it’s effects on individuals and communities. I throughly enjoyed Connor’s and David’s development individually and as a couple. The revenge scene at McDonald’s was delightfully mischievous and well planned as well as well-deserved. I enjoyed the character development of Gordy very much and I enjoyed how Connor’s father overcame his self-induced isolation and started working his relationship with his family again. The only fault I can find in this book is that personally I think Chuck should have recieved a more serious punishment for the horrible things he did. This book overall was enjoyable, the characters development individually and collectively happened realistically and their growth from the beginning to the end was satisfying. I definitely recommend this book to other readers and hits home many points that many people struggle with in their daily lives.
