I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.First, I would like to say that I absolutely fell in love with the Juliana series. I stumbled on this series by accident and I am so glad I did. I couldn't put the first four books down. I felt like I was there with Al the whole time. I could literally picture everything going on. I felt the jitters, confusion, happiness, anger and heartbreaks she was feeling. And as most probably did, I just fell in love with the Juliana character. Even though she was distant and cold at times to Al, I still felt they had a great connection and deep love as the story went on. Vanda has a way of letting you know that Al is the love of Juliana's life without actually saying it.This book (fifth) left me feeling empty. I knew after reading the first 4 chapters, I was going to have a difficult time finishing it. This book didn't reach out and captivate me like the first four did. I enjoy reading about the transition of Al and how she is starting to discover who she really is, but it lost the appeal at times.I wish we could have read more about Juliana as well as Al. This book barely has any dialogue with Juliana.At times the story line seemed to drag out a little and I found myself getting a little bored. There are a lot of typos, so you have to overlook those and fill in words.In all, I still love the series and I am looking forward to the next book. If you are a fan of this series, I do recommend reading the fifth book to continue Al and Juliana's story. Even though this book didn't call out to me like the other books, it may call out to you. It's definitely an intriguing story of how butch's lived during that era. Vanda has done a fantastic job of researching and putting together a beautiful story. I have done some researching of my own based off things I read in this series and my mind was blown. Hopefully by the end of the series, Juliana and Al will get their happy ever after. I've read all books in this series and will continue until the end. That will be a sad day.There are three constants in this series that make it so good. The characters are real in every sense of the word. These books could pass as biographies rather than fiction. Like all humans, the characters have flaws but most of them remain eminently likable. Also, they realistically change over time which is somewhat rare for characters in long-running fictional series. They learn and mature which makes them all that much more real.With words, Vanda paints vivid scenes of times past. I know, painting with words is a cliche but I can't think of anything better right now. Often the locations are characters in these books. I knew nothing about the NYC nightclub scene in the late 1950s but in reading her books I felt like I was there. She adds enough details of place and time to bring the locations to life.And, third, these books are extraordinarily well researched. I've read a lot of history of gay culture and the gay rights movement. With fine-tuned references, Vanda accurately weaves the real history into her fiction. Given the span of years of these books cover when so much of society was changing, keeping true to this history had to take dedicated research.These characters' stories share many aspects typical of the struggles of all minorities against a very repressive culture. But there is optimism to them. In summary. I like these books.
