I had just finished completing a review of this book, several paragraphs in fact, when I accidentally lost it! Argh!! Here goes againThis is the 6th installment of the Chronicles of Alsea. I've read all 6 and this rates in the top 2 which says a lot considering how much I have enjoyed this series.This book is a departure from the other books because the focus starts with a 13 year old girl, Rahel, who is certain that she wants to be in the warrior caste, consuming every book she can on the subject. Unfortunately she's the daughter of 2 parents in the merchant caste who want her to follow them into their caste. They see a future where she runs the store while her siblings create what she sells. Her parents refuse to entertain the idea that she could or should be anything else.At 15, after a betrayal by her father, she runs away to Whitesun, a big city on the coast. Since she cannot get a job without parental approval she is forced to work for low pay on the docks loading cargo. She sleeps on pallets aboard the ships but walks the streets until late because she must sneak aboard the ship or be literally thrown off the ship , likely killed or maimed, if discovered. While walking the streets she comes upon a very small young man being beaten by 2 men. Her honor forces her to come to his aid and that begins her friendship with Mouse, a young man who is small and has a disfigurement, though he's actually 2 years older than her.The book tells the story of this strong young woman who faces all kinds of hurdles as an Outcaste, taking risks to try and become an honorable warrior without the ability to enter the Warrior Caste House or legally work without parental permission.As the years go by the fork in the road merges to join a story that is at once recognizable and new. Familiar characters enter and the reader sees that there are many sides of the same story.I see this book as a saga, a tale that the Alseans will tell for generations. Ms Delancey's writing is so descriptive that while reading of the raging storm crashing on the docks I moved closer to the fireplace. True story.The only problem with this book is that the reader has to WAIT for the next one! Don't worry....the author ties this one up with a bow. The problem is that I enjoyed it so much that it's hard to wait for the next one. There's an entire universe ready for more Chronicles of Alsea stories. I tried to read this in increments to make it last but I ended up eating the entire cake in one sitting! Well done! Chronicles of Alsea is a fantastic work of science fiction. All of the books are driven to make you care about the world and the characters involved. I promise you these books are a full out obsession. Outcaste specifically follows an interesting new character and her struggle having everything ripped away from her and having to work from the ground up on the life she wants to live. This book did an excellent job of showing amazingly realistic characters in a fantastic but also realistic world!SERIOUSLY...read it. It is freaking amazing.
